An expected utility theory for state-dependent preferences

چکیده
This note is a generalization and improved interpretation of the main result of Karni and Schmeidler (An Expected utility theory for state-dependent preferences. Working paper no. 48-80 of the Foerder Institute for Economic Research, Faculty of Social Sciences, Tel AvivUniversity, 1980). A decision-maker is supposed to possess a preference relation on acts and another preference relation on state-prize lotteries, both of which are assumed to satisfy the von Neumann–Morgenstern axioms. In addition, the twopreference relations restricted to a state of nature are assumed to agree. We show that these axioms are necessary and sufficient for the existence of subjective expected utility over acts with state-dependent utility functions and a subjective probability measure. This subjective probability measure is unique when conditioned on the set of states of nature in which not all the prizes are equally desirable.

A theory of quantifiable beliefs
Building upon the works of Anscombe and Amuann [Ann. Math. Stat. 34 (1963) 199] and Karni and Schmeidler [An expected utility theory for state-dependent preferences. Working Paper 48-80, Foerder Institute for Economic Research, Tel Aviv University], we develop a general axiomatic theory of quantifiable beliefs—a form of probabilistic sophistication that does not preclude state-dependent prefere...

متن کاملDecision Making under Uncertainty and Subjective Probabilities
This paper presents two axiomatic models of decision making under uncertainty that avoid the use of a state space. The first is a subjective expected utility model with action-dependent subjective probabilities and effect-dependent preferences (the case of effect-independent preferences is obtained as a special instance). The second is a nonexpected utility model involving well-defined families...
متن کاملRemoved preferences
In formalizing a ‘veil of ignorance’ type procedure, this paper considers how an agent’s preferences over a set of alternatives change as he is placed at an increasing ‘distance’ from the consequences of his choices. A definition for such ‘removed preferences’ is presented and its properties studied. As an application, it is demonstrated that decreasingly impatient agents are ‘essentially’ expo...

This paper explores two axiomatic structures of subjective expected utility assuming a ...nite state-space and state-dependent, connected, topological outcome-spaces. Building on the work of Karni and Schmeidler (1981) the analytical framework includes, in addition to the preference relation on acts, introspective preferences on hypothetical lotteries that are linked to the preference relation ...
